Hello J’Da Prynces and J’Da Pryncesses! It’s good to be back after quite an extensive hiatus. Hope you all have been keeping well. A lot has transpired in my life over the last several months and I am excited about many of the up and coming events that are unfolding. That being said, let’s dive right in to my next blog.
By now, much of the nation, and probably the world, has caught at least a bit of the viral video of the young black man at the 107th Church of God in Christ (COGIC) Convention who approached the pulpit during the alter call to be “Delivert More.” In so doing, the presiding minister, Bishop Brandon Porter, asked him to make a declaration of his faith. The young man claimed he was delivered from homosexuality and he would no longer carry a purse or put on make-up. Ultimately, he stated he did not like “menses nomore,” but that he liked women; “women, women women” followed by some kind of babble.
As your can imagine, the video had the internet community in an uproar for the past week with many individuals eager to share their two cents, twenty-five cents, and fifty-cents on this man’s supposed conversion. These sentiments have ranged from tomfoolery to those in support who wish the man well in his deliverance.
As with anything I write, it is my greatest priority to come from a knowledgeable and factual basis. Therefore, I chose to consult the dictionary- just to make sure I had the correct understanding of the term “Delivert.” What I reconfirmed is “delivert” is not a word. Delivered, deliver, and deliverance are the closest terms to what I believe this young man was attempting to convey in his message.
I honestly have so many angles I would love to expound upon on this story, but as Sweet Brown put it best, “Ain’t nobody got time for dat.” Therefore, I will just focus on one aspect-the deliverance part. Deliverance, a word derived from the Old French born in the 1300s, is defined by Dictionary.com as: a.) rescue from moral corruption or evil; salvation. b. an act of setting free in physical or spiritual sense.
As a young man, I too was brought up in a strict religious setting. So, I can identify with the feelings of the self-loathing and un-acceptance depicted in the Church of God in Christ video. In the Pentecostal denomination I was raised in, we were often fed the message that homosexuals were an abomination, so hideous and ugly to God, there was no other suitable judgement than to burn in the eternal flames of hell for our sins. I was taught that homosexuals of the world are the worst of all beings and, therefore, could live their happy “gay” lives knowing that in the end, when we close our eyes in that great and final moment of death, we will open them to Hell’s gates, scorched and eternally melted by fire and brimstone. That’s some scary shit! Who wants that, right?
Like the young man in the video, I too tried to PRAY THE GAY AWAY. Surely, it was that simple for me to change the thing within myself which was completely and utterly unacceptable and unfit for humanity and the Creator who gave me life. All I had to do was babble some hocus pocus, mumbo jumbo and “Voila” I would be deliver[t]- right? WRONG! It doesn’t work like this. Or, at least it didn’t work for me. The only thing this kind of “deliverance” created within me was feelings of inadequacy, self-hatred, self-doubt, confusion and frustration. This kind of “deliverance” made me question my self-worth and manhood. Am I not a man because I find men attractive? Was I going to base my entire self-worth and existence on my sexuality- a subject many people have more questions about that answers? As I got older, and began to read, study more and gain experiences through life’s lessons, I have learned this kind of “deliverance” is the most damning of them all. It is so very easy to throw a few Bible verses at someone or something when we do not agree, fully comprehend or value them/ it’s worth. How easy it is to use the name of God to appeal to a person’s emotions and strike them down with fear rather than research.
Certainly, each of us has things in our lives we may need to change in order to live happier, more righteous and productive lives. However, I venture to say that a person’s sexuality should probably not be making the top of that list! There are many things we need to be delivered from more. If someone could take that ‘hocus pocus stick’ and deliver me from laziness, selfishness, greed, lying, cheating and fear, I would really appreciate that!
Can we as a nation and world be delivered “more” from War, Famine, Racial Discrimination, Rape, Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, Ageism, Sexism, Poverty…and I could go on and on! But, NO-the biggest problem plaguing our land right now are those “Menses” who like other “Menses.” Everyone knows if we can just rid the earth of all the homosexuals the world would be a much safer place to inhabit, right? After all, God was so displeased with the homosexuals back in the day-What did he do class? Yes, He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah! Gold Star for you, Billy! Of course, it is so easy to pluck out a story and not understand it in context! And, this my friends, is what people who offer the kind of “deliverance” as depicted in this video do- they neither understand nor are able to teach in context. I am not claiming to be a scholar of any sort, but I am pretty certain that our MOTHER EARTH would appreciate it if we all “delivered” to each other a little more kindness, compassion, empathy and love!
I would like to close out this blog with a message that a young man named Howard Fitzgerald, who I respect very much and have become friends with through Facebook posted on his wall last week. Sending Out A Special Prayer This Morning…For All The Gay Folk Seeking Deliverance….May You Find Deliverance From Attending Places…That Mock, Bash, Berate And Belittle You…May You Find Deliverance From Low Self Esteem And Self Hatred…May You Learn To Love Yourself Such That…There Is No Longer A Need To Seek The Acceptance Or Approval Of Others…May You Find The Courage To Take A Stand For Yourself…And, Never Allow Anyone To Disrespect You…May You Find Yourself At Peace And In Love With Self.
Thank you for reading and may your day be filled with lots of joy, peace and happiness. And, as Howard would say, “And there You have it.”
