Have you ever stopped long enough to ask yourself, “Who or what inspires me?” Take a second to think about it! Now, take another minute and ask yourself! (Do for the vine-Haha!) Go to the mirror and ask yourself. Feel free to pose the question out loud! “Who or what inspires me?” I can only imagine that you will most certainly, as I did, experience a plethora of emotions surge through your entire being when you really stop for a minute and meditate on this simple but magnificent question. For- what is inspiration?
The definition of inspiration which I am most fond of is taken from the source Dictionary.com. It is defined as (a.)a divine influence directly and immediately exerted upon the mind or soul. Let’s dissect this definition even further. The word divine connotes something that is heavenly or celestial. Influence– as defined by the aforementioned source is the action or process of producing effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of another or others. I’m sure we all can agree that immediately refers to an action or something that is done with little hesitance or delay. Something occurs rather quickly when it is immediate. The two most challenging words to grasp here, in my opinion are mind and soul. Dictionary.com defines the term mind as the element, part, substance, or process that reasons, thinks, feels, wills, perceives, judges, etc. Lastly, the word soul is characterized as the principle of life, feeling, thought, and action in humans, regarded as a distinct entity separatefrom the body, and commonly held to be separable in existence from the body; the spiritual part of humans as distinct from the physical part. So, when we break down the word [inspiration] to its most basic form, we’re really talking about a person or persons being moved or influenced within their feelings by some heavenly or celestial force to commit an action or actions! So, again, I ask-who or what inspires you? And, what does this inspiration lead you to do? Are you inspired to be a leader? Are you motivated to become a great philosophical writer (as I am)? Are you roused to find the cure for the A.I.D.S. epidemic? While these things in my simple opinion are all positive and meaningful, it is important to note that we can each also allow ourselves to become negatively influenced and therefore do things that will cause great hurt and harm to others. Is that you? Do your words bring forth life or solicit death? Do your actions heal or do they destroy?
