Okay, so by now, thanks to AMC Network and Netflix pretty much the entire U.S. of A. and probably much of our beautiful planet has some familiarity with the WALKING DEAD , the American post-apocalyptic horror drama television series developed by Frank Darabont. It is based on the comic book series of the same name by Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard. The series stars Andrew Lincoln as sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes, who awakens from a coma to find a post-apocalyptic world dominated by flesh-eating zombies. He sets out to find his family and encounters many other survivors along the way. And, Breathe….!
We’re all pretty familiar with the symptoms of zombies; the rotting or dead flesh, a trance-like state that would rob people of any sign of higher cognitive function, an inability to communicate in anything more than moans and grunts, a slow, shuffling gait, and (if we’re really lucky) a taste for human brains, or at the very least the desire to bite people. While zombies have reigned in our science fiction novels and movies for quite some time now, it seems there has become an overwhelming fascination with the (un)dead here recently and I am beginning to wonder more and more, what is the reason for such preoccupation with the “WALKING DEAD.” I’m starting to think that perhaps, it may have something to do with the fact that for many of the beings taking up space on our precious earth, the “WALKING DEAD” is an appropriate description. How many people have you encountered on a weekly basis who seem to walk about aimlessly and purposeless? On many corners in both rural and metropolitan areas alike, at any given time it almost seems common place to come across individuals who seem to have no clue about their future and are merely operating in a state of existence. Could this series the “WALKING DEAD” be a dramatized version of what is really happening in our society today? If one were to read or watch some of the stories reported by many of our media outlets, he or she might be tempted to answer with an emphatic “YES!”
I, for one, do not wish to become a zombie or a part of this “WALK DEAD” phenomenon! Rather, I purpose in my life to be the Walking D.E.A.D.! What is the difference? Allow me to share!
DETERMINED-While life is tough and throws a series of curve balls each of our way; I extend the friendly challenge to each of you, myself included, to be resolute. We must decide for ourselves that no matter what obstacles we may face, we will never give up! We will never settle for less than what we know we are capable of achieving; and we are indeed capable of achieving greatness. From building skyscrapers, to finding a cure for cancer, from building pyramids, to walking on the moon, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish if we are unshakably DETERMINED!
ENERGETIC-None of us can afford the luxury of being lazy and lethargic. There is absolutely too much for us to score, gain and win out there! Besides, who really likes to be on the losing team? “Not I,” said the cat! So why do it? We want that promotion at work; energize ourselves to go get it! We want that perfect soul mate; energize ourselves to find him/her! We want that dream home, dream car, dream vacation? Let’s energize ourselves and go after it! Kick that potential energy into kinetic gear and go for yours, whatever it may be!
ATTITUDE AND APTITUDE (Positive)-My father always told me, “Son, your attitude determines your aptitude.” He was never more right! I have learned in my several decades on this earth, that it is not my situation, but my attitude about any particular situation that makes all the difference. This is not to say that I possess a perfect attitude at all times, but what I do know is that, I have the power to determine how I will act or respond in any given situation. I know that it is to my benefit that I adopt the most positive attitude possible as doing so certainly can and in most cases does have a positive effect on the outcome of any situation! What is your attitude today? Decide now that it will be positive and watch how far you soar!
DOER-I recall so many of my friends telling me that when they wanted something they would ‘pray about it and wait on a miracle.’ Good luck with that! I’m not opposed to prayer at all! Whatever works! But, there are two sayings that I think often go unheeded; action speaks louder than words and if you snooze you lose. No, these are not the most profound statements ever, but ironically they are. We can speak words all day, but if there is no action put behind those words, chances are very little is going to get accomplished. And, for those snoozers out there, while you’re off somewhere dreaming in La La Land, certainly the early bird is busy stealing your worm. Only, I wouldn’t exactly call it stealing. You’re practically giving it to him. I love the slogan of the Nike Brand, a simple but profound, JUST DO IT! That’s it! Do it! Whatever it is, Do it, and Do it unapologetically. Start that business! Get that next degree! Build that addition to your home! Become the next Top Model. Just Do it. No, it may not be easy, but take the steps and you will be surprised when you look back at just how far you’ve come.
While watching zombie movies and shows may be quite entertaining, this is certainly not the role or character I want to play in real life (I’ll pass on the brain eating). I want so much more out of life than to walk around in a stupor-like state with no purpose or direction. I want to see that the dreams painted on my mind’s canvas become a living work of art, and I want the same for each of you. An individual who is DETERMINED and ENERGETIC who possesses a positive ATTITUDE which has a direct effect on their APTITUDE will most certainly be a DOER of some of the most amazing feats this world will ever see or come to know. So I ask you, are you WALKING DEAD or WALKING D.E.A.D?
